Steven Patrick Morrissey nació el 22 de mayo de 1959 en Davyhulme, Manchester, Inglaterra. Desde chaval se sintió atraído por la escritura, dándole prioridad a la poesía. Con influencias desde Oscar Wilde a Goethe. Sigue de cerca la música pop y el cine.
En 1980, Morrissey conoce al guitarrista Johnny Marr, quien lo invitó a colaborar con él. Luego incluyeron a otros compañeros de Marr, el bajista Andy Rourke y el baterista Mike Joyce, y fundaron el grupo The Smiths generando un sonido propio con influencias de rock and roll clásico, country y punk.
Se lanzaron varios álbumes de The Smiths: The Smiths; Hatful of Hollow; Meat is Murder; The Queen is Dead; Strangeways, Here we Come; los recopilatorios Louder than Bombs y The World Won't Listen; un disco en vivo, Rank; y varios singles desde 1983 hasta 1987, cuando la banda se separó por los conflictos creativos que habían surgido entre los fundadores.
Morrissey comenzó una exitosa carrera solista. Con Your Arsenal (1992), fue nominado a un Grammy como mejor álbum alternativo. En el siglo XXI se lanzan álbumes como You are the quarry (2004), Ringleader of the tormentors (2006) y Years of Refusal (2009).
